Dr. Who, Lego Movie, and more!

The big news in the United Federation of Lego is the Dr. Who Ideas set that was just announced yesterday! This wasn’t exactly shocking as there were 2 up for review so you would hope that with that sort of momentum that one gets through. What’s with that though, the other campaign gets the shaft huh. They should each get some hype points because I bank that both of those had mutual voters. We all win because what a winning combo! This seems to keep happening where very similar ideas have to compete against each other, and if a couple make it to review then it really should be a new system.

I came across this very cool custom this morning which is fairly relevant for a Lego gaming blog such as this one. The dude wanted to make a custom Galactus after playing Lego Marvel and cooked up his own. The DIY photo gallery is stellar and includes steps to make your own if you are feeling bold.

It’s going to be interesting, instead of selling mocs it looks like they are going to be providing instructions that you can then purchase the bricks for. You might have to get the bricks across multiple sites so they will have some dynamic instructions that show best store candidates and options for different bricks.

This along with the recent 3d model view in the individual parts catalogue shows there are many big changes being rolled out for this long standing pillar in the community.

Paul Heatherington celebrated the 40th anniversary of figures in Lego. These go by many names, some call them maxi-figs, I call them homemakers. I have a fondness for them and always happy when I find a part in a pick through. It’s interesting how the arm joints have kept in rotation and now with new ball joints introduced in Mixels, the hand tow balls are back in play!

Paul’s creation has many nods to the era and reflects his consistently crafty building style 🙂

Morbid thought about Ghostbusters and Egon/Harold Ramis. I think that he might be the first person who was made into a minifig to have passed away. I have a cursory, non-exhaustive database in my head on the subject and pretty sure this is the case.

The Friends are going on a pretty big adventure this year, off to the jungle! The set lineup looks very nice and a great way to get the lil animals into the sets, including Rapunzel’s chameleon Pascal in a new colour. Yellow walky talkies!

This is pretty beautiful and much like the Lego Movie I’m having a hard time finding anything wrong with it, and with it my estimation of Cuusoo has went up.

Have you seen the new guns? They are in one of the Lego Movie sets and some of the new army builder Star Wars sets. They shoot great! You can fully lose the projectiles. Amazing new design, welcome to the future.

Did you hear… Mattel bought Megablocks? So after being bumped out the big #2 by a building blocks company, I guess they decided that they needed their own bricks to get back in the game. They’ve been obviously courting the idea for a bit with the Megablocks Barbie line so this is not a huge surprise. I welcome it as it will bring healthy competition, but it is just another successful Canadian company to be gobbled up by the States.

I’m pretty chuffed about these new mini Hero Factory figs:

The Bionicle ones that came out years ago were great and still use them every year at our VicWars games. These sets look to have lots of nice parts too, looking forward to seeing more.

I’m getting all ready for a local Lug show this weekend, the WestShore Mall Hobby Show, something we haven’t done in maybe 4 years, but did for about 4 years before that. It conflicted with Gottacon which was booking us a year in advance. Westshore is a 3 day event where we take over an empty store and do our thing. We’ll have mocs on display, a builder’s corner and our public build and display zone. We are also going to try and make a mini VicWars setup to get brushed up for Gottacon in a month.  Plus some Lego Movie action this weekend….

Have you heard this version of Everything is Awesome? It’s pretty awesome.

Can’t you hear sentry turrets singing this? I feel enriched.

Nerd Titan

2014 Lego

There’s been a bit of a buzz around the net lately about 2014 sets, many of which we’ve already gasbagged about here, like Disney Princesses and Lego Movie. A few new items have been revealed as of late which are pretty flipping interesting.

You might have seen this picture of the Simpsons House circulating, boosted by Gizmodo but debuted on Eurobricks:

This looks just beautiful and looks like it’s worth it if you are a parts hunter as well as a set aficionado. Also looks expensive, this looks like a fully realized moc, quite surprising.

The source seems to be an early adopter on ebay or something.

Here’s a few other things that caught my eye:

There’s a line of cute little Microfighters coming out and this one looks just ducky

 

Look at some of these great new Chima figs coming out, don’t be shy, you might want to open this one up in it’s own tab. Those spiders are just *bringing it* look at those new leg elements! Hilarious use of meteor too.

It’s not secret that I’m a Friends fan, and especially all the little polybag animals which is coming up on Series 5.

 

 

Here’s some more Lego Movie set glimpses, not all of which are confirmed sets but it’s looking good.

 

 

There is a list circulating from the Hungarian site Markabolt that has some very curious info on it. It looks like Agents will make it’s return as well as the #1 on my StarWars wishlist: Mos Eisley Cantina. I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I don’t think it’s going to cost *enough*…. to do it right. It looks to be about $80 USD and methinks this needs to be a 2-300 set. Maybe they will break it up into 2 sets like Jabba’s Palace and the Rancor set? I love that 2 pack. You could have Han, Chewy, Greedo, the droids and some alien, in the eating area of the Cantina. Then another set with Luke, Obi, Walrus Man, Hammerhead, some Bith and whoever else at the bar with the stage. One can dream.

The 2014 Marvel sets are snoopable and there are some somewhat interesting tidbits.

This is pretty great for all the electrical zappy parts, but of particular interest is Electro’s transparent arms. We are that much closer to a Mythran fig.

I’m seriously not up on all my superhero variations, and have only watched a couple episodes of Ultimate Spiderman, so was not aware of this Green Goblin. Seems kind of useless outside the context of the character with this big dopey costume but maybe the head comes off.

This set looks like it will be of good value. The Modok looks hilarious and Falcon’s wings look to be the Egyptian wings in red.

I think this line is using the Monster Hunter gem pieces… without prints which is great. This set probably also has some great play features.

It’s kind of like a real well built Time Twisters line.

From what I’ve seen so far, I’m mostly interested in the Minifigures series and maybe a couple of the sets to get the new parts. These will be great sets to get for starter collections, they look to have an incredible variety of parts.
