I guess this would be recreation in both senses of the word, doing it for leisure since really not supposed to profit off them. What I’m referring to though is the various projects being undertaken in the fan community to recreate the game, some of which have been posted on this blog and others that prefer to remain quiet about it for now.
I’m honestly not keen on attaching myself to these, and not necessarily for any legal types of burdens. I feel that if you do this right and don’t try to profit off of it then you won’t attract the glaring eye of the Legal Tower. My main apprehension is that you are making a ghost town that is not even meant to be eventually populated. All of them that I’ve seen right now is the terrain but no NPC, vendors or mission givers. No pets, no flair, no collectibles and most importantly no other players. What made LU so wonderful? It was a great environment but it came down to the people who filled it.
Instead of an authentic but hollow recreation of the levels, how about ideas along the lines of BONS. Alternate timelines and events in familiar settings. Then if players ever go to visit them they will not immediately be filled with comparisons to what is missing, but what you included. Good luck to all the projects out there though and I’m authentically curious as to what you come up with!
Lufugees are also gathering on Steam. If you have an account there go show your support:
There is also Project Build which is another recreation group:
I’m not sure how much steam they have ( oh I see what you did ) but support these guys nonetheless. Hollis has attached himself to this one, check it out.
Moody yet begrudgingly optimistic song of the day
I don’t know these guys personally but think what they are doing is pretty interesting. Of course it reminds me of Kelvins’ work, who I found to be a gentleman and a scholar. I find these kinds of projects just fascinating and it shows the investment that some of the fans still have in LU. I wish them the best of luck in their endeavour, regardless of the surrounding morality and legality of what it all entails. It’s a special kind of curiousity and craftsmanship that drives these sorts of things and one thing TLC should take from this, and other similar projects, is that the player community is capable of more than what was offered in the property and behaviour set of tools. What if a Happy Flower type of building tools could be unlocked if a player hit the Hall of Fame or otherwise proved themselves to be an accomplished creator?
