It didn’t survive the voyage home, but I was able to mostly piece it together for a final shot of this stage. It’s ok because I had fully planned on retooling it for the next stage and my shipment of slopes arrived after I had made this.
For the Cherrybomb show our club did a floating rock display. For some time I’ve been meaning to make the Sector 6 Outpost level as a real life Lego model so I can start populating it with LU stuff. This was my opportunity to get that ball rolling 🙂 This stage of the floating rock is ‘pre-discovery’ so it’s not colonized yet, and this installment is showing how I built the internal structure.
I have some experience now with all my various pumpkin attempts and floating moonbase at making semi-large structures that have an odd centre of balance. For this size object, I felt that a square was good enough because I’d round it out with bricks.
I just built it as I went without a specific plan and found that I had to use jumper plates to line up corners.
Adding the plates on top and because of the offset there was fault line. I could add a joist on top with jumper plates but had to come up with an inverted jumper plate solution using brackets because they have the hollow studs and the lil centre tube on the 2×2 plate fit in snug. Two of those on either side added sufficient support.
This is what one side looks like. I ended up adding tiles in the 2×2 square where the offset plates overlapped. At this stage I had the side plates held on with jumper plates but that would not hold up with the eventual weight that I’d be adding to each side.
So I went with pins into tubes, red brick style. It’s not elegant but it works hard. Attached the plates to the red bricks and that wasn’t going anywhere. You can see the offset joist on top which was mirrored on the reverse side.
VicLUG was at the 11th Cherrybomb Ultimate Toy & Hobby Fair. We had a mix display of a city scene, floating rocks and other mocs.
My floating rock is the one with the multi-coloured crystals, more on that in another post. Also look for a future post about the zombie house in the miscellaneous mocs.
