Our Lug is going to participate in a local Christmas event in a couple of weeks, it’s called Festival of Trees and it’s at a really nice heritage hotel. Last year was the first time we participated and we ended up getting second place! I personally think that had a lot to do with it just being a novel type of tree because it really wasn’t that creative. Mostly a bunch of sets and clear balls filled with loose bricks, but we were testing the waters. People go full out for these trees and make incredible decorations. I’ll be sure to post some examples when the event happens.
This year our theme is 3x scale. I’ve never made any creations in it but have been familiar with it for some time. One of our club members, Rod ( a former S6 too ) made a few bricks and a truck from his childhood in this scale. He organizes this event and set the theme, which I’m pretty happy about! With 3x scale you take normal sized bricks and triple the proportions. Take Duplo bricks, they are 2x scale, and Quatro bricks are 4x scale. So naturally…. these must be Triplo! I was pretty chuffed when that idea came to mind that I had to google it to see if anyone else had used that term. Turns out that no fan had… but the Lego company has…! In 1970 they trademarked the term and created a logo but never made any products… until now…
The beauty of 3x scale is that it works very intuitively with Lego. A Lego brick is 3 plates high so each plate ends up being a brick. The round 2×2 tiles work perfectly as a stud. I plan on making a small set this week ( I need it ready by setup on the 20th! ) but have a handfull of Triplo bricks ready.
I’m pretty happy with the final design, you should be able to figure out what I did by the photo but if anything is not clear then please ask.
Here are a couple more links on 3x scale:
