SamuraiMaster here. There’s so much to say now that LU has come to a close. I’d like to start with some of the info I have about the upcoming Castle World.
I’m certain everyone saw the concept art and read the interview from Mike Rayhawk. Looked pretty impressive, right? Concept art often does. So, the big question is: the concept is fine and good, but what stage was the actual world building team at with the castle when the end was announced? Right about here:
The above is a hodgepodge of images from I received from a Lead World Artist at LU from between 10/19 and 10/21. The LU team was referencing a great online LEGO castle site called Carney Castle that has a large number of real-world castles built out of LEGO. Additionally, they were exploring the up-scale of official LEGO castle sets to ~10x scale. The grand-scale castle would serve as the centerpiece of the world (as is visible in Mike Rayhawk’s concept art.)
The problem they were running into with referencing real, large-scale castles like those on Carney Castle is real castles are boring. They have huge walls (called “shield walls”) that are large, flat, and lifeless. They weren’t rendering well in-game, and you can see multiple attempts above to “spice things up” with heraldry, brick color and texture, destruction/erosion, etc…
The Lead World Artist was very open about their challenges, very receptive to suggestions, and there was no doubt in my mind the end result was going to be a fantastical journey through a plastic medieval era. It’s truly a shame we never got to see the end result, but I thought you’d all like to see the very beginnings of it.
